Kure lies on the calm Seto Inland Sea, surrounded on three sides by green mountains. These geographical features led the Japanese Government to establish a navy base in Kure and, in 1903, the Kure naval arsenal.
From this hill, referred to in signage as the “Hill Overlooking Historic Areas,” you can see a panoramic view revealing how the city transformed from an Imperial Japanese Navy base to the vibrant industrial city it is today.
Huge battleships, including the Yamato, were built and sailed from here.
